    Criminal Investigations:

Normally when a crime is committed, the first people called are the Police.  Unfortunately, in Harris county (Houston), the Police have an extremely large case load.  We recommend that when you are the victim of a crime, always notify the Police and make sure a report is generated, as this starts the paper trail.  Ask if the case will be assigned to an investigator and how long that process will take.  You may find that either your case will be handled by the uniformed officer, or it may take weeks or months (if at all) to be assigned to an actual Investigator. In Harris county if there is a theft that is under $100,000 you may find that it takes quite a long time to have your case investigated.  Property crimes such as home burglary, vehicle thefts, and commercial theft are often a low priority.  Even when there is physical evidence on scene, the Police often are not able to follow through with the investigation.

This is where a Private Investigator comes in.  First, if you have been assigned a Police Investigator for you case, be sure to ask them if they will be actively working on it or if you can hire a Private Investigator.  ALWAYS give the Police the first crack at your case. You do not want to step on any toes by injecting a Private Investigator into the case while there is an ACTIVE Police Investigation going on.  The Police Investigator may very well tell you that your case is low priority, and they recommend you hire a PI.  The quicker you have someone working on your case, following leads, interviewing people, etc, the better chance you will have to solve your crime.

One downside to using a PI will be that we do not have access to the Police Laboratories and Finger Print Databases.  We may be able to obtain DNA or finger print samples from the scene, but we are not able to submit those samples to Law Enforcement Databases.  If the Police Investigator is willing, sometimes we can provide them with our evidence, or if we generate a "hot lead", they will take over and investigate the case.  It is always better to work WITH the Police than AGAINST the Police.
